Large‐scale synthesis of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets and their improvement in thermal properties of epoxy composites

Abstract: In this study, we report a novel method to synthesize hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) using a ball‐milled mixture of ammonium fluoroborate and sodium borohydride as precursor, under an ammonia atmosphere. The detailed morphological and structural investigations of the BNNSs are carried out by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high‐resolution TEM, and detailed formation process of the BNNSs is proposed. We further utilize the BNNSs and acid‐treated BNN… Show more

“…Most straightforwardly, increasing the filler content in the composite can improve the thermal conductivity; for example, a thermal conductivity of 32.5 W/mK was reported when BN reached a loading fraction of 78.5 vol% in polybenzoxazine matrix . Surface modification of BN assists with homogenous dispersion of filler in resin matrix . Mixing multiple sized particles leads to high packing density and easy formation of conductive pathways .…”

“…ERs are utilized as an adhesive, coating, construction material, laminate and matrix to obtain composite material . However, ERs have some shortcomings such as brittleness, low toughness and thermal conductivity, and so on . Different fillers play an important role to overcome aforementioned deficiencies in the polymer composites.…”

“…By adding 25 wt% of BNNS into epoxy, the thermal conductivity of the composite has an enhancement of 180% compared to the pure epoxy resin, while the temperature corresponding to 10% of the thermal weight loss increases by nearly 20 °C. Surface modification of BNNS and the hybrid nano-fillers have become one of the research hotspots [30,31]. Yao et al [32] prepared a high thermal conductivity polyvinyl alcohol-paper by using polyvinyl alcohol as a matrix and BNNS/AgNP/SiC hybrid as a ternary mixed filler.…”
