Resumo. Considerando o cenário de mudança de uso da terra aliada às alterações climáticas no semiárido brasileiro, a evapotranspiração atual (ET), a produção de biomassa (BIO) e a produtividade da água (PA) baseada na ET, foram quantificadas sob diferentes condições termo hídricas com três imagens Landsat 8 (L8) de 2014 no município de Juazeiro, Estado da Bahia (BA), Nordeste do Brasil. Os valores médios dos pixels para ET, BIO e PA, nas culturas irrigadas, variaram respectivamente de 2.9 ± 1.2 a 3.8 ± 1.6 mm d −1 ; 107 ± 64 a 124 ± 75 kg ha −1 d −1 ; e de 3.0 ± 0.7 a 3.4 ± 0.8 kg m −3 . As faixas correspondentes para a Caatinga foram de 0.1 ± 0.1 a 0.9 ± 0.6 mm d −1 ; 1 ± 2 a 13 ± 11 kg ha −1 d −1 , e 0.5 ± 0.6 a 1.4 ± 0.5 kg m −3 . Os valores incrementais da PA, representativos da substituição da vegetação natural por culturas irrigadas foram de 300%, para o ano estudado. Maior uniformidade nos parâmetros hídricos e de vegetação ocorreu nas espécies da Caatinga, evidenciada pelos menores valores de desvio padrão quando comparados com aqueles para as culturas agrícolas. Os modelos testados no atual estudo podem subsidiar o monitoramento dos agros-ecossistemas, sendo valiosas ferramentas para a sustentabilidade dos recursos hídricos na região semiárida do Brasil.Palavras-chaves: Evapotranspiração. Considering the climate and land-use change scenario in the Brazilian semi-arid region, actual evapotranspiration (ET), biomass production (BIO), and water productivity (WP) based on ET, were quantified with Landsat 8 images under different thermo-hydrological conditions of 2014, in the Juazeiro municipality, Bahia (BA) state, Northeast Brazil. The mean pixel values for ET, BIO, and PA, for irrigated crops, ranged respectively from 2.9 ± 1.2 to 3.8 ± 1.6 mm d −1 ; 107 ± 64 to 124 ± 75 kg ha −1 d −1 ; and from 3.0 ± 0.7 to 3.4 ± 0.8 kg m −1 . The corresponding ranges for "Caatinga" were 0.1 ± 0.1 to 0.9 ± 0.6 mm d −1 ; 1 ± 2 to 13 ± 11 kg ha −1 d −1 ; and 0.5 ± 0.6 to 1.4 ± 0.5 kg m −3 . The incremental PA values, representing the consequence of replacement of natural vegetation by irrigated crops were 300% for the studied year. Higher uniformity for the water and vegetation parameters happened in "Caatinga" species, evidenced by the lower values of standard deviation, when compared with those for agricultural crops. The models tested in the current study can subsidize the monitoring of the agro-ecosystems, being powerful tools for the sustainability of the water resources in the Brazilian semi-arid region.

Many remote sensing-based evapotranspiration (RSBET) algorithms have been proposed in the past decades and evaluated using flux tower data, mainly over North America and Europe. Model evaluation across South America has been done locally or using only a single algorithm at a time. Here, we provide the first evaluation of multiple RSBET models, at a daily scale, across a wide variety of biomes, climate zones, and land uses in South America. We used meteorological data from 25 flux towers to force four remote sensing based ET models: Priestley & Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory (PT-JPL), Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), Penman-Monteith Mu model (PM-MOD), and Penman-Monteith Nagler model (PM-VI). ET was predicted satisfactorily by all four models, with correlations consistently higher (R²>0.6) for GLEAM and PT-JPL, and PM-MOD and PM-VI presenting overall better responses in terms of PBIAS (-10

The hydrology and productivity of the ecosystems of the Yucatan Peninsula (YP) are highly constrained by two factors: (a) the lack of surface drainage networks due to the existence of a highly permeable and connected karstic aquifer roughly the size of the peninsula and (b) a climatic gradient that leads to a transition from seasonally dry deciduous and sub‐deciduous tropical forests, in the north‐western and central parts of the Peninsula, to evergreen forests, in the southern and eastern parts. As a result, surface water fluxes of the YP are restricted to evapotranspiration (ET) that are tightly coupled to ecosystems health and gross primary productivity (GPP). The magnitude and seasonal variation of these fluxes are sensitive to climatic variability and perturbations caused by extreme events such as droughts and tropical storms that are frequent in the YP. In this study, we assess the spatio‐temporal dynamics of ET and GPP above average dry and wet conditions through time series analyses of 15 years of remotely sensed data from both Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite products. Our results show that ET and GPP follow a regional moisture and temperature gradient that highly controls the distribution of ecosystems within the peninsula. We observe that ET and GPP are in phase with the rainy season in the deciduous forests, but for the evergreen forests, only the GPP is in phase. Additionally, and with the exception of droughts on deciduous ecosystems of the northern part of the YP, the productivity of these ecosystems shows a legacy effect, responding more to a defined trajectory (wetting or drying on the previous years), rather than to punctual extreme climatic events. This has implications on the resilience of these ecosystems to natural perturbations of climate. Comparisons between deciduous and evergreen forest indicate that both types of ecosystems have different plant water use strategies in response to hydrologic variability.
