“…The association between species of the tribe Centridini and species of Malpighiaceae results in a very specialized mutualism, with flowers depending on bees for pollination and the larvae of those bees depending on pollen and flower oils for nourishment (Vogel, 1974), although some species of bees use nectar rather than floral oils (Aguiar & Garófalo, 2004). Moreover, these bees use the oil as construction material for nests (Vogel, 1974;Vinson & Frankie, 2000;Vieira-de-Jesus & Garófalo, 2000;Aguiar et al, 2003;Dórea et al, 2009Dórea et al, , 2010ab, 2013Rabelo et al, 2012). Studies performed in different biomes and orchards report these same three genera of Malpighiaceae as the main sources of pollen and oil for many species of Centris (Gaglianone, 2001;Ramalho & Silva, 2002;Rêgo et al, 2006;Vilhena & Augusto, 2007;Ramos et al, 2007;Dórea et al, 2009Dórea et al, , 2013Mello et al, 2013 and references therein;Santos et al,2013 and references therein; Rabelo et al, 2015).…”

“…Pollen represents one of the main aspects of habitat quality for bee populations. Many Centridini species use Byrsonima as a pollen source (Aguiar & Gaglianone, 2003;Dórea et al, 2010;Rabelo et al, 2012), and, therefore, we expect that fluctuations in Byrsonima abundance directly influence bee reproduction.…”

“…This study used the taxonomic classification proposed by Angiosperm Phylogeny Group II (Souza and Lorenzi 2005). The pollen grains that presented similar morphology were grouped into pollen types according to which were previously proposed in the literature Rabelo et al 2012).…”
