Larvicidal efficacy of nitenpyram on the treatment of myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in dogs

Abstract: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the larvicidal efficacy of nitenpyram for the treatment of screwworm myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax in naturally infested dogs. Seven Beagle dogs presenting with myiasis were treated with nitenpyram twice at an interval of 6 h. The animals received dosages between 1.43 and 4.42 mg/kg body weight of nitenpyram in each given treatment. The criteria used to determine the drug efficacy were larval expulsion and fall. These were quantified at 15 min intervals with… Show more

“…When external contaminants enter the organism, these superoxide anions and oxygen free radicals, namely ROS, will be produced (Rana and Shivanandappa, 2010). Nitenpyram can be absorbed fast by blood and then caused the host death by interfering nervous transmissions (Correia et al, 2010). In the present assay, the ROS levels significantly increased with exposure to high concentration treatment.…”

“…Rejoining a herd after treatment is therefore suggestive that the individual has recovered and has regained fitness. Ivermectin and doramectin are among the common larvicidal agents [18,19], giving up to 100% efficacy in the treatment of myiasis in domesticated animals [20]. In the present case, we suggest that our treatment regime, which was based on Ivermectin, was effective on these wild elands.…”
