Laryngeal mask airway for ventilation during diagnostic and interventional fibreoptic bronchoscopy in children

Abstract: Laryngeal mask airway is a safe and effective adjunct to fibreoptic bronchoscopy under general anaesthesia in children. Its larger internal diameter compared with a tracheal tube permits the use of relatively large fibreoptic bronchoscope without a significant increase in airway resistance.

“…It has been suggested that laryngeal mask airways protect both pediatric and adult airways against blood, secretions and debris during dental and otorhinolaryngological surgeries 13 , which can be confirmed by fiberoptic endoscopy 14 . In this study, when we removed the laryngeal mask airway, it can beobserved that the part of the mask that maintained contact with the larynx was bloody in some cases.…”

“…Although the rigid bronchoscope is usually the first choice to diagnose and remove laryngotracheal foreign bodies, flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy also has a role (10–12). Laryngeal masks are used to facilitate fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and have been used successfully to extract tracheobronchial foreign bodies in children (10). It was extremely useful in our case as it enabled a far better view of the larynx than the laryngoscope provided and the airway was better maintained.…”

“…Hiçbir komplikasyon gelişmeden yabancı cisim, fiberoptik bronkoskop ve LMA birlikte çıkarılmıştır 50 . Diğer bir çalışmada ise çocukların yüz maskelerine T parçası yerleştirilerek spontan solunum altında fiberoptik bronkoskop intranazal olarak kullanılmıştır.…”
