Laryngeal mask for airway management in open tracheal surgery—a retrospective analysis of 54 cases

Abstract: Based on this analysis of 54 patients, we would consider the laryngeal mask airway a feasible alternative to the tracheal tube for airway management and ventilation during open tracheal surgery.

“…A different approach was selected for tracheal resection and reconstruction in this case, according to the location of the tracheal lesion. The upper part of the trachea was generally resected from the neck approach, while the procedure in the lower part of the trachea was performed from the thoracic approach [6]. With advances in minimally invasive techniques and devices, VATS resection and reconstruction of the trachea can achieve radical resection of the tumor [7].…”

“…Different procedures require different methods of anesthesia and different airway management. Various oxygen delivery routes include nasal catheters, face masks, laryngeal mask airway (LMA) and supraglottic tubes, such as Wei nasal jet tube, endotracheal tube, and rigid bronchoscope [ 2 , 3 ]. Endoscopic face mask is one of the most commonly-used oxygen-delivery devices for BI because of its high comfort and non-influence on bronchoscope insertion.…”

“…Also, when comparing the ETT with the LMA during ventilation, the anastomosis line is less affected because less airway pressure is created in the LMA ventilation. 3 In our clinic, tracheal resection and reconstruction (TRR) has been performed on eligible patients with LMA since 2016. 1 In this study, we aim to present different indications and situations for using the LMA in tracheal surgery.…”
