Laryngeal tubercolosis: a case report with focus on voice assessment and review of the literature

Abstract: Laryngeal tuberculosis (LTB) is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis (TB), accounting for 1% of all TB cases. Despite its rarity it is the most frequent laryngeal granulomatous disease. We performed a systematic literature review of the last 20 years on LTB and also present a case from our hospital with special focus on voice assessment. The literature review includes a total of 308 cases, involving studies from seven countries. In all, 64.3% of patients were males. At the time of diagnosis, the mean age range… Show more

“…The patient who experienced bilateral SSNHL also had bilateral peripheral vestibular hypofunction and was subsequently diagnosed with Cogan’s syndrome. Cogan’s syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease primarily affecting young adults, is marked by non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis and audio-vestibular symptoms; in particular, SSNHL, irrespective of its association with vestibular symptoms, can be the initial manifestation of this syndrome [ 19 ]. Although some authors have suggested that younger age is a favorable prognostic factor for SSNHL [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ], our data showed that only one in five patients had complete recovery of the HT.…”

“…Atypical Cogan syndrome is classified as vestibulocochlear symptoms associated with an inflammatory eye disease other than IK or when the interval between the onset of vestibulocochlear and ophthalmologic symptoms is greater than 2 years. 7,8 Caucasian young adults are most commonly affected with a median age of onset of 29 years. There does not appear to be a gender-specific prevalence or a hereditary component.…”

“…Therefore, in all cases, a multidisciplinary approach is important to determine the most appropriate and proper therapy. 21 22 Anyway, the histological examination is the gold standard diagnostic examination that allows to differentiate laryngocele from other macroscopically similar lesions such as saccular cyst, neck abscess, branchial cyst, and neck adenopathy. 6 Moreover, histology provides another important information: the concomitant presence of a laryngeal cancer or amyloidosis.…”
