Laryngitis and neutropenia from parvovirus-B19

Abstract: Parvovirus-B19 has been reported a rare cause of acute laryngitis. Here, we described an 11-month-old girl who had prolonged acute laryngitis and neutropenia associated with parvovirus-B19 infection. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy resulted in resolution of her symptoms, except neutropenia. We concluded that parvovirus-B19 can cause prolonged laryngitis and intravenous immunoglobulin treatment should be considered.

“…Other syndromes for which a causative role for B19V is unclear include generalized edema (963)(964)(965)(966), myositis (967), the onset of diabetes (968) and inflammatory bowel disease (969), uveitis (970), retinal detachment (971), retinal pigment epitheliopathy (972), Rosai-Dorfman histiocytic proliferation (973), laryngitis (974), inner ear disease (975), and testicular tumors (976). B19V DNA persistence in the thyroid after previous infection may account for associations with thyroid cancer (191) and autoimmune thyroiditis (977).…”

“…He had a respiratory rate of 56 breaths per minute and a temperature of 39°C, and sepsis was thus diagnosed. 24 Four cases did not meet the definition of SIRS, 18,20,22,23 and the reports of the remaining 6 cases had no clinical information on SIRS diagnosis. 2,17,19,21 Therefore, existing evidence is insufficient for determining how often sepsis or sepsislike syndrome develops in infants.…”
