Laryngotracheal Reconstruction with a Muscle-Pedicle Hyoid Bone Flap: A Series of 23 Patients

Abstract: We conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of muscle-pedicle hyoid bone flaps in the repair and reconstruction of the larynx and trachea in 23 patients who had undergone extended partial laryngectomy. Of this group, 17 patients had undergone surgery to correct laryngotracheal stenosis and 6 to remove laryngeal carcinoma. Intervention resulted in successful decannulation in 20 of the 23 patients (87.0%). Of the 3 patients who did not experience a successful outcome initially, 2 were successfully decannu… Show more

“…Zur and Uren used a composite thyroid‐tracheal flap for large subglottic and glottic loss after resection . In 2004, Casiz proposed a muscle‐pedicle hyoid bone flap for laryngeal reconstruction . In the eighties publications about laryngeal reconstructions using different pedicle flaps were presented, such as pectoralis major, sternocleidomastoid myoperiosteal, sternohyoid myocutaneus rotary door, or sternohyoid myofascial …”

“…13 The use of muscle pedicled hyoid flaps has also been reported previously. 14,15 A temporary tracheal stent was inserted during the operation and removed weeks later. The tracheostomy tube was then replaced with a Montgomery T-tube to allow a longer length of airway to be stented.…”
