Las paradojas del heroísmo y de la civilización en Ignacio Manuel Altamirano

Abstract

Las paradojas deL heroísmo y de La civiLización en ignacio manueL aLtamiranoabstRact This paper aims to unveil the perspective held by the Mexican writer and a man of many talents, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, about two concepts that were esential to the social and political changes faced by the XIX th century Mexico: on one side, the concept of hero --and, with it, the concept of heroism -, and on the other side the concept of Civilization. The last notion is approached from the standpoint offered by the analysis conducted by Norbert Elias about the sociogenesis of that same notion. A brief historical inquiry shows that, by the end of XIX th Century, French thinkers were already aware of some of the contradictions implied by that concept. That historical inquiry also shows that the contradictions found in Altamirano's writings are not exclusive to the perspective held by the Mexican thinker. Key-woRds: eliaS; Hero; HeroiSM; civilization; altaMirano.Résumé Cet écrit cherche à devoiler la position soutenue par le multifacettique écrivain Mexicain Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, au regard de deux concepts que seraient essentiaux aux changements socio-politiques du Mexique du XIXème siècle: d'un côté le concept du héro et, avec lui, le concept du héroisme, et d'un autre côté le concept du Civilisation. Cette dernière notion est approchée à la lumière du travail conduit par Norbert Elias autour de la sociogenèse du concept de Civilisation. Avec l'appui d'une bref revision historique, cet écrit signale que, en France, à la fin du XVIIIème siècle, certaines contradictions avaient été trouvées dans le concept de Civilisation et, dans ce sens, les contradictions que l'on pourrait trouver dans la même notion telle q'elle a été traité para Altamirano, ne lui sont pas exclusives.
