Laser acupuncture and intravascular laser irradiation of blood for management of pediatric dental anxiety

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of laser acupuncture and intravascular laser irradiation of blood (ILIB) for managing anxiety in pediatric dentistry. Eighty-four children recruited at a university dental clinic were randomly assigned to three groups: the Sham group (n = 27) underwent sham laser irradiation of three acupuncture points, the ILIB group (n = 25) underwent 10 min of ILIB, and the laser acupuncture group (LAC, n = 32) underwent 40 s of laser acupuncture over points VG20 (Baihui… Show more

“…HR was similar between the groups during treatment, although a gradual decrease was found at the end of the procedure in group B, but not in group A. This finding agrees with other studies in children, in which HR decreased significantly after the procedure in the group that received acupressure or acupuncture at documented points [12,13]. The gradual reduction in anxiety due to the use of acupuncture contributed positively to future dental appointments for these children [12].…”

“…Indeed, anxiety triggers physical reactions that alter electrical and neurochemical conduction in the autonomic (sympathetic) nervous system, thereby promoting changes at cardiac receptors and increasing HR [22]. Acupressure at documented points, as performed in the present study, promotes dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system over sympathetic stimulation, causing relaxation, reduced HR, and an anxiolytic effect [13].…”

“…The laser to be used is infrared-red, with power of 100 mW ± 20%, wavelength 808 nm ± 10 nm, continuous application. [13] These parameters were taken as a reference since they were presented in a previous article, in which it was considered safe and did not cause discomfort to the patients. The technique is not invasive, the point of irradiation is by continuous and direct transcutaneous application to the radial artery by means of a bracelet that inserts the laser beam.…”
