Laser desorption ionisation quadrupole ion trap time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry of titanium‐carbon thin films

Abstract: Mass spectrometry proved useful for elucidating the chemical structure of the hard ceramic-like Ti-C layers produced by magnetron sputtering. The Ti-C layers were found to be complex composites of various chemical entities. Knowledge of the resolved structure could accelerate further development of these kinds of materials.

“…Details can be found elsewhere. [61,62] Mass spectra were recorded in both positive and negative reflectron ion modes using al aser repetition rate equal to 10 Hz and ap ulse time width of 3ns. Mass spectrometric analysis was carried out by averaging mass spectra from at least 1000 laser shots.…”

“…This process has been described for the formation of arsenic and arsenic sulphide clusters, [14] AgSbS 2 , [15] zinc oxide [16] and zinc sulphide [17] clusters, gold phosphides, [18] gold tellurides, [19] lanthanide oxide clusters with incorporated heterovalent metal ions, [20] and carbon clusters from nano-diamonds. [21] LAS has also been used for the analysis of various solid material nano-layers such as As-S-Se [22] and As-Se [23] glasses, phosphorus nitride [24] and titanium carbides, [25] where the identification of structural fragments of solids using LDI-TOF-MS has been demonstrated.…”
