Laser surface alloying with carbon on 15-5PH steel for improved wear resistance

Abstract: Supersaturated carbon alloying layer was prepared on the surface of 15-5PH stainless steel using laser surface alloying technology with carbon powders as alloying materials. XRD, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, microhardness test and wear test were performed to characterize the microstructure and wear resistance of substrate and alloying layer. Results showed that the alloying layer was rapidly solidified dendritic structure with phase compositions of high-carbon austenite and a small amount … Show more

“…The LR/LC coating presents the best wear resistance, which is approximately 40 times of the substrate and 5–6 times of HVOF coating according to the wear rate. The wear rate of the coatings is inversely proportional to their hardness values, which coincides with the well-known Archard's law [2830].
Figure 8 Variations in coefficients of friction as a function of the sliding time (a), weight loss and wear rate (b) for the pure Al substrate, HVOF coating and LR/LC coating.

“…The hardness was measured every 0.25 mm along the radial direction from the surface of the roller to obtain the hardness change of the hardening layer. The friction coefficient, wear morphology and wear quantity are important parameters used to characterize the friction properties of materials [21][22][23]. The friction coefficient is the ratio of the friction moment between two contact surfaces to the positive pressure perpendicular to the surface and the radius of the grinding ring.…”

“…Лазерное легирование в слое обмазки увеличивает многообразие возможных структур легированных слоев по сравнению с традиционными способами химико-термической обработки. Химическим составом слоя, его микротвердостью и однородностью можно управлять путем регулирования следующими основными параметрами обработки: типом и толщиной легирующей обмазки, фракционным составом используемого порошка, родом окружающей газовой среды, геометрией фокусировки лазерного излучения, мощностью и скоростью сканирования луча [4][5][6][7].…”
