Intense pulsed light (IPL) is not the single most effective treatment for acne vulgaris. However, light therapy can result in a significant short-term improvement in symptoms, making IPL a low-risk, accessible treatment modality for this skin condition. Research is starting to show the benefits of tailoring or combining IPL with other treatments; although undoubtedly an important factor in the effectiveness of any IPL treatment remains the competency of the practitioner themselves. The ability to take a holistic overview of the patient's symptoms, and then customise and target interventions, is key to a treatment plan optimally tailored to meet individual needs. The majority of studies in this area have involved small sample groups and reviewed short-term outcomes. With this in mind, more in-depth studies are required if aesthetic practitioners are to understand the full potential of IPL in the treatment of acne.
