Laser treatment of cutaneous angiokeratomas: A systematic review

Abstract: Angiokeratomas can present therapeutic challenges, especially in cases of extensive lesions, where traditional surgical methods carry high risks of scarring and hemorrhage. Argon, pulsed dye (PDL), neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG), copper vapor, potassium titanyl phosphate, carbon dioxide, and erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) lasers have emerged as alternative options. To review the use and efficacy of lasers in treating angiokeratomas. A PubMed search identified randomized clinica… Show more

“…The incidence of scrotal angiokeratomas remains to be determined. Local destructive methods, including lasers (Table 2 ) [ 13 , 14 , 22 31 ], have traditionally been used to treat angiokeratoma of the scrotum [ 1 4 , 6 , 12 – 14 , 21 31 ].…”

“…The 532-nm wavelength is produced by placing a KTP crystal in the path of a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser beam, which results in a frequency-doubled 532-nm wavelength, which is absorbed well by oxyhemoglobin. The laser allows contact cooling through a sapphire window [ 22 , 32 ].…”

“…Cryotherapy, electrosurgery, excision, laser surgery and sclerotherapy have all been successfully used to treat angiokeratomas. Indeed, several of these techniques have been used in men with PEAKERs [54][55][56].…”

“…Angiokeratomas are benign vascular neoplasms that arise as solitary or multiple lesions, most commonly observed as hyperkeratotic, red to black papules or plaques [1][2][3]. Histologically, there is marked dilation of the papillary capillaries.…”
