Laser Treatment of Hereditary Multiple Glomus Tumors

Abstract: Familial multiple glomus tumors are rare. A family is reported here with the disease documented in three generations. While this type of glomus tumor is not classically associated with pain, all members of this family who exhibited multiple glomangioma were symptomatic. Treatment with both the argon laser and carbon dioxide laser was successful in relieving symptoms and improving the appearance of only the more superficial glomus tumors.

“…Some studies have shown good results using sclerotherapy with tetradecyl sulfate, polidocanol and hypertonic saline in the treatment of multiple GVMs on the limbs . Ablation with argon, carbon‐dioxide or pulsed dye laser can also sometimes help reduce the thickness and symptoms of GVMs …”

“…Successful treatment of multiple glomangiomas has been reported with electron beam irradiation, sclerotherapy, and laser therapy (ablative or pulse dye). [135][136][137][138][139][140] Malignant glomus tumors (also known as glomangiosarcomas) are rare neoplasms, and some authors even doubt that such lesions exist, the most controversial issue being the recognition and acceptance of those in which no benign component is present. In addition to the soft tissue, malignant glomus tumors have been reported in a variety of sites, including skin, bone, bladder, central nervous system, lung, and gastrointestinal tract.…”

“…Malignant change has not been reported in multiple glomus tumours and therefore treatment is essentially symptomatic. Traditionally laser therapy has used the argon and carbon dioxide lasers, which are ablative in nature 7 . We used pulsed dye laser because of the large number of ectatic vessels in the lesion.…”
