“…This tectonic event could have been related to the so-called "Mid-Permian Episode" of Deroin & Bonin (2003), connected with the transformation of strike-slip to an extensional tectonic regime. A similar stratigraphic gap and geodynamic changes were described in the Eastern and Southern Alps as well as in the wide peri-Mediterranean realm (Krainer 1993;Cassinis et al 2012 and references therein) that was reflected in the evolution of two major tectono-sedimentary cycles. Cassinis et al (2012) considered this stratigraphic gap to be synchronous with the geomagnetic IR event (Menning 1995(Menning , 2001Steiner 2006) that has been postulated by Isozaki (2009) as the trigger agent for the Pangea breakup.…”

“…On the basis of distinct differences in mineralogical maturity a disconformity between them could be suggested. Further information is given in Tollmann (1964Tollmann ( , 1972Tollmann ( , 1977, Oberhauser (1980), Krainer (1993).…”

“…Several meters of thick dark shales containing abundant well preserved plant fossils are developed at the top of these megasequences. About 80 species of plant fossils have been described from the interbedded shales and thus suggest the Kasimovian-Gzhelian age (Tenchov 1980;Krainer 1989aKrainer ,b, 1992Krainer , 1993Fritz et al 1990). Current direc- tions show in the present geographic orientation a distinct eastward trend indicating that the sediments of the Stangnock Formation were deposited in an approximately E-W-trending intermontane basin.…”

“…The presence of Claraia in the Induan may be interpreted as a rapid return to relatively deep-water sedimentation (Taraz et al, 1981;Hallam and Wignall, 1999). In the Eastern and Southern Alps, the Upper Permian-Lower Triassic was a unique sedimentary cycle (Krainer, 1993). In the interim, at the base of the Upper Alpine Buntsandstein Fm (middle Lower Triassic), a significant regression occurred in this region (the so-called 'Campill Event').…”
