Late cabbage planting density

Abstract: Late cabbage forms a large above-ground mass which requires certain vegetation space in order to thrive. Late cabbage planting density should therefore, start from at least 70 cm inter-row and 50 cm intra-row spacing. Transplanting at the required spacing gives 28.600 plants per hectare. The required spacing provides proper plant development, the formation of rosettes (over 70-80 cm) with large leaves, and compact cabbage heads. Applying cultivation techniques needed for cabbage production and proper spacing r… Show more

“…The main cabbage producers in Serbia are family farms. The cabbage is mostly grown in the region of Šumadija and Western Serbia, where 42% of total cabbage production is carried out, followed by the region of Southern and Eastern Serbia with 25%, Vojvodina autonomous province 24% and the region of the city of Belgrade, where 9% of total cabbage production is carried out (Červenski and Medić-Pap, 2018). Average yields of cabbage are range from 20-30 t ha‫¹-‬ in heads for early varieties, 35-45 t ha‫¹-‬ in medium late varieties and 40-50 t ha‫¹-‬ in late varieties.…”

“…Among agronomic practices which could bring about increase yield and low production cost are spacing and mulching techniques already in use by the vegetable farmers. Plant spacing is the distance put between one plant and another inter row and intra row which when too dense leads to crop crowding, competition for nutrients, air, moisture, water and affects the size of the cabbage head as well as yield (Cervenski, et al, 2018). However, in economic point of view narrowing spacing gives higher plant population on a plot of land and is reported to give significantly higher net returns compared to wider spacing (Parmar, 2021).…”
