As so ci ate Ed i tor: Leszek Marks An ear lier con cept of the Variscan fore land in Po land (Narkiewicz, 2007) is re con sid ered in the light of new strati graphic, tectonic and geo phys i cal ev i dence, pro vid ing new data on De vo nian sed i men ta tion, Car bon if er ous magmatism and the deep crustal struc ture of SE Po land. Re gional com par i sons with the tec tonic evo lu tion of Cen tral Eu rope and the Black Sea re gion show that the sub si dence pat tern in the fore land was con trolled by al ter nat ing phases of ac cel er ated con ver gence and tectonic stand still along the south ern mar gin of Euramerica. In par tic u lar, the Bretonian (De vo nian/Car bon if er ous) compressional de for ma tion re sulted from in ten si fied orogenic con ver gence in the West-Cen tral European Variscides lead ing to clo sure of the Saxo-Thuringian Ba sin and East-Sudetic back-arc ba sin. An other turn ing point in the re gional tectonosedimentary de vel op ment around the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian bound ary was prob a bly re lated to the ter mi nation of terrane col li sion in the Black Sea re gion. Late Penn syl va nian ba sin in ver sion was as so ci ated with a roughly N-S tectonic short en ing. This was partly due to dis place ment along pre-ex ist ing base ment dis con ti nu ities com pris ing re ac ti vated Cal edo nian su tures that also pre-de ter mined the Devonian-Carboniferous ba sin bound aries. Con se quently, deeply-rooted tec tonic zones, in clud ing the Kraków-Lubliniec and Holy Cross faults and the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone, fo cussed max i mum compressional and transpressional de for ma tion and as so ci ated up lift. Such a con cept of ter mi nal Variscan tectonism, termed here the "de coup led model", is dis cussed with ref er ence to the re cently pro posed "cou pled model". The lat ter assumes a wide ex tent of the Variscan Orogen, reach ing as far as the mar ginal Radom-Kraoenik Fold-and-Thrust Belt linked with the Bo he mian Mas sif through a ma jor basal de tach ment. It is con cluded that the "de coup led model" is more con sis tent with the doc u mented seis mic and struc tural ev i dence as well as with the pres ent knowl edge of the heterogeneous pre-De vonian base ment in south ern Po land.

Geophysical and geological data from the eastern sector of the Central European Variscan belt are presented and reviewed in the regional tectonic context. Matched filtering of isostatic gravity, guided by results of spectral analysis, along with other derivatives of gravity and magnetic fields reveal a dominant WNW-ESE-trending pre-Permian structural grain in the external zones of the Variscan belt in Poland. This trend is confirmed by regional distribution of dips in Carboniferous and Devonian strata that were penetrated by boreholes beneath Permian-Mesozoic sediments. Based on these data, two alternative concepts explaining the connection of the Variscan belt and its NE foreland, those of strike-slip tectonics versus oroclinal bending, are discussed. The WNW-ESE structural trend in the Variscan foreland is parallel to a set of major strike-slip fault zones in the area, including those of Upper Elbe, Intra-Sudetic, Odra, Dolsk and Kraków-Lubliniec. These faults are considered to convey a significant dextral displacement between Laurussia and Gondwana. The revised position of the Variscan deformation front shows a similar, uninterrupted, generally WNW-ESE trend, up to the SE border of Poland, which indicates an initial continuation of the Variscan belt into the area of the present-day Western Carpathians. The geometry of the Variscan deformation front along with the pattern of the Variscan structural grain are inconsistent with the idea of an oroclinal loop affecting the external, non-metamorphic Variscan belt. However, the data presented do not entirely rule out an oroclinal loop within the Variscan internides. The still possible options are (1) a semi-oroclinal model postulating ~ 90° bending of the Variscan tectonostratigraphic zones into parallelism with the WNW-ESE strike-slip faults or (2) an orocline limited only to the belt linking the Wolsztyn High and Moravo-Silesian non-to weakly-metamorphic fold-and-thrust belt. Regardless of the kinematic model preferred, our data indicate that structural evolution of the Polish Variscides was concluded with the end-Carboniferous NNE-SSW shortening that resulted in the present-day extent of the Variscan deformation front.

We demonstrate how lithological and mechanical stratification of Ediacaran–Carboniferous sedimentary package governs strain partitioning in the Lublin Basin (LB) which was incorporated in the marginal portion of the Variscan fold-and-thrust belt. Based on the geometry of seismic reflectors, the pre-Permian–Mesozoic sedimentary sequence was subdivided into two structural complexes differing in structural style. The lower one reveals forelandward-vergent imbrication, while the upper one comprises fold train, second-order deformations, and multiple local detachments. Lithological composition of the upper structural complex controlled geometry, kinematics, and position of compressional deformations in stratigraphic profile. System of foreland-vergent thrusts which links lower and upper detachment developed due to efficiency of simple shear operating in heterogeneous clastic-carbonate-evaporitic strata of the Lower–Upper Devonian age. Internal homogeneity promoted the formation of conjugate sets of thrusts in Silurian shales and Upper Devonian limestones. Structural seismic interpretation combined with sequential restoration revealed localised thickening of Devonian strata and up to 5% difference in length of Devonian horizons. This mismatch is interpreted as a manifestation of distributed shortening, including layer-parallel shortening (LPS), which operated before or synchronously to the initiation of folding. The amount of distributed strain is comparable with numbers obtained in external parts of other fold-and-thrust belts. The outcomes derived from this study may act as a benchmark for studying variability in a structural style of multilayered sequences which were incorporated in the external portion of other fold-and-thrust belts.
