Late Cretaceous endemic shallow-marine gastropod genera of the northeast Pacific: biodiversity and faunal changes

Abstract: Endemic genera of shallow-marine gastropods in the Cretaceous Northeast Pacific Subprovince (NEP), extending from Alaska to northern Baja California Sur, Mexico, are tabulated and discussed in detail for the first time. None are known in Lower Cretaceous or Cenomanian strata, but 43 genera, nearly twothirds of which are neogastropods, are recognized in Upper Cretaceous strata. Their first appearance was at the beginning of the Turonian, which coincided with the warmest time of the Cretaceous and one of its hig… Show more

“…implications.-Upper Cretaceous shallow-water carbonates from the Tethys Ocean were accreted in the Mediterranean area and constitute the best archive of the endemic or amphitropical fauna that prevailed in this vast ocean during the Late Cretaceous (Kauffman, 1973;Sohl, 1987;Christensen, 1997;Squires, 2011Squires, , 2018Steuber et al, 2016). Trochactaeon (Trochactaeon) is a widespread taxon recorded in Europe, Caucasia, Asia, America, south-southwestern Africa, and Arabia-northern Africa (Fig.…”

“…In the northeast Pacific region, the earliest known buccinid is the Late Cretaceous Eripachya Gabb, 1869. It was endemic to California and formed a lineage of three species (Squires and Saul 2003), whose members occurred intermittently only during the warm times of the Turonian and Campanian but not during the cooler times of the Coniacian and Santonian (Squires 2018). PARANCISTROLEPIDINAE Habe, 1972 Remarks- Kantor et al (2021) noted that subfamily Parancistrolepidinae Habe, 1972 has priority over Ancistrolepidinae Habe and Sato, 1973.…”
