Late Devonian paleontology and paleoenvironments at Red Hill and other fossil sites in the Catskill Formation of north-central Pennsylvania

Abstract: The stratifi ed red beds of the Catskill Formation are conspicuous in road cut exposures on the Allegheny Plateau of north-central Pennsylvania. During this fi eld trip we will visit and explore several fossil localities within the Catskill Formation. These sites have been central to recent investigations into the nature of Late Devonian continental ecosystems. By the Late Devonian, forests were widespread within seasonally wellwatered depositional basins and the spread of plants on land from the late Silurian… Show more

“…Daeschler and Cressler (, table 1) established a list of the Red Hill fauna and flora contents. The vertebrate fauna comprises phyllolepid and groenlandaspid placoderms, gyracanthid acanthodians, primitive chondrichthyans, palaeoniscid actinopterygians, dipnoan, rhizodontid, megalichthyid and tristichopterid sarcopterygians, as well as early tetrapods.…”

“…Plant fossils from the area continued to be the focus of later works (Arnold, 1939;Beck, 1964;Driese et al, 1997). An abundance of fossil flora has been reported in the Upper Devonian, including progymnosperms, lycopsids, spermatophytes, zygopterids, stauripterids, and barnophytes (Daeschler and Cressler, 2011).…”

“…The sedimentology suggests that this material was deposited in meandering stream and overbank facies of the Catskill Formation. The considerable lateral and vertical variation within the sediments at Red Hill reflects the heterogeneity of depositional facies within a meandering stream system with frequent avulsion events (Daeschler and Cressler, 2011). Most of the vertebrate remains are found in red sandy siltstones and sandstones that accumulated along the strandline of the aggrading margins of channels after avulsion episodes.…”
