Late recurrence of melanoma after 10 years – Is the course of the disease different from early recurrences?

Abstract: Background It is known that melanoma can metastasize and recur many years after the first diagnosis. Although predictive and prognostic factors for melanoma are well defined, there is still insufficient information about the factors affecting the recurrence period and the effect of the recurrence time to survival. Objectives This study investigates the course of melanoma to show prognostic factors comparing early and late recurrence patients. The main objective is to uncover the effect of the recurrence time o… Show more

“…Melanomas less than 0.8 mm in depth have a 10-year survival rate of 98% (2). Despite these favorable outcomes, metastatic disease developing from thin melanomas has been reported in the literature with some studies suggesting it is a rare occurrence representing 1.2% of metastatic melanoma cases (3), whereas others report a higher frequency of 24.1% (4). Lifelong dermatologic follow-up is important for all patients diagnosed with invasive melanoma, and this case emphasizes the importance of melanoma in a patient's medical history regardless of the size and time since diagnosis.…”

“…Late recurrence of melanoma is defined as disease recurrence 10 years or more after initial diagnosis. Late recurrence of melanoma presenting as distant metastases is a rare occurrence, with a recent study finding it represents 2.9% of metastatic cases (4). Late recurrence of melanoma was associated with younger patients, fewer ulcerations, fewer head/neck primary tumors, and thinner melanomas and seem to have a similar prognosis to those patients with early recurrence.…”

“…По данным литературы, риск возврата меланомы наиболее велик в первые 2-4 года после постановки первичного диагноза [9]. Однако она может метастазировать и рецидивировать через много лет после первичной диагностики [10,11].…”
