Late Vaginal Induced Abortion after a Previous Cesarean Birth Potential for Uterine Rupture

Abstract: This descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the risk of uterine rupture in cases of late vaginal induced abortions among women with previous cesarean sections. 23 women were referred at a mean gestational age of 23.9 (SD 6.9) weeks of gestation after one or two cesarean sections. Indications for terminating the pregnancy were maternal diseases in 4 cases and fetal anomalies in 19 cases. RU 486 and/or prostaglandins were used for cervical ripening and to induce labor. Vaginal birth was obtained in 20 cases… Show more

“…Our results clearly indicate that women with such a history can safely terminate their pregnancy in the second trimester by inducing vaginal birth. We achieved a 99.4% vaginal delivery rate, which is in accordance with a previous study, 7 reporting an 86.9% vaginal birth rate at term in women with a similar history. Another important finding of our study was that a previous caesarean delivery does not appear to increase the incidence of complications in women who undergo a pregnancy termination in the second trimester by induction of labour.…”

“…Late vaginal induced abortions after a previous caesarean section have been reported [3]. However, this case is the first report of a successful late vaginal-induced abortion in a woman with two uterine scars and a cone biopsy.…”

“…Three other studies examined uterine rupture risk in women with prior cesarean delivery who were given mifepristone for secondtrimester abortion. [25][26][27] Among the 294 women included in these studies, two experienced uterine rupture. Combining these three studies and the two included in this review, the risk of uterine rupture with the use of mifepristone for second-trimester abortion in women with a history of cesarean delivery is 1.15% (95% CI 0.45-2.92%).…”
