Laterality of cervical disc herniation

Abstract: Purpose Cervical disc herniation (CDH) is found more frequently at the lower cervical spine than at the upper or middle level. However, there is scarcity of data about the laterality of CDH. The aim of this study is to detect the laterality of CDH. Methods We retrospectively evaluated preoperative computed tomography myelograms and magnetic resonance images of 75 cases of CDH who underwent single level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at C4-5, C5-6, or C6-7 levels from 2008 to 2010 in our institute. “…In general, CDH can lead to neck and upper extremity pain, myelopathy, or radiculopathy resulting in numbness, weakness, or paresthesias (McCormick et al, 2003;Abbed and Coumans, 2007). Although the exact pathogenesis of CDH remains unclear, it is widely accepted that mechanical stress may be an important factor in the development of CDH and facet joint degeneration (Takahashi et al, 2013). It is well understood that the IVD performs key mechanical functions in distributing spinal load and maintaining flexibility (Loreto et al, 2011).…”

“…Degenerative cervical myelopathy, as the very common form of spinal cord impairment,1,2 gains in popularity with the aging of population world-wide 3. Due to disc degeneration, the fragment of disc (mainly nucleus pulposus) is pushed into the spinal canal via a rupture in the annulus, referred to cervical disc herniation (CDH),4 compressing the spinal cord/spinal nerve roots thus leading to clinical manifestations. Revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CDH was the only finding significantly associated with clinical symptoms 5.…”
