Latest Advances in Cardiac CT

Abstract: Recent rapid technological advancements in cardiac CT have improved image quality and reduced radiation exposure to patients. Furthermore, key insights from large cohort trials have helped delineate cardiovascular disease risk as a function of overall coronary plaque burden and the morphological appearance of individual plaques. The advent of CT-derived fractional flow reserve promises to establish an anatomical and functional test within one modality. Recent data examining the short-term impact of CT-derived … Show more

“…Comparably, 2D images are x-rays or radiographs. Cardiac CT is known for its speed, reliability, and high resolution ( 72 ). CT can assess the extent of coronary stenosis (e.g., catheterization can assess if stenosis is present) and visualize the thoracic aorta.…”

“…Initial cohort studies of this scoring system demonstrate an increase in the FAI-score with age ( 239 ), as would be expected with the inflammation associated with vascular aging. Advanced imaging analysis ( 240 ) can also allow us to identify salient features on CTCA that are associated with aging and explore any prognostic significance they may have in being incorporated into an assessment of coronary arterial age.…”

“…Recent years have seen rapid advances in cardiac computed tomography (CT), which has led to its use for cardiac and coronary artery imaging. 4 Moreover, advances in terms of temporal and spatial resolution now allow CT scanners to facilitate high-resolution cardiac imaging. As such, over the past decade, CT has been used as an alternative imaging modality for diagnosing IE.…”
