North of İstanbul, a thick Upper Cretaceous volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of the Yemişliçay Group is nonconformably overlain by the neritic clastic and carbonate 2 sequence of the Zekeriyaköy Formation. This unit, either placed within the volcanic sequence or interpreted to overlie it, was studied near Zekeriyaköy for its larger foraminifera, previously recurrently referred to the Maastrichtian. The basal epiclastic sandstone beds of the Zekeriyaköy Formation immediately above the volcanic sequence contain Praesiderolites dordoniensis and rare rudist shells. The higher sandstone and limestone beds comprise assemblages of Lepidorbitoides campaniensis, Orbitoides megaloformis, Vanderbeekia catalana, Siderolites gr. calcitrapoides, Sirtina orbitoidiformis, Praestorrsella roestae, Lenticulina rotulata, Planorbulina (?) sp., agglutinated and rotaliid foraminifera, rudist fragments, bryozoans and red algae. Lepidorbitoides, the most abundant foraminifera in the studied material, has predominantly L. campaniensis-type embryons with a single auxiliary chamberlet, and rarely L. bisambergensis-type embryons, characterized by having two such chamberlets. The Praesiderolites dordoniensis-Lepidorbitoides campaniensis-Vanderbeekia catalana assemblages, recorded for the first time from Turkey, suggest a late Campanian age for the Zekeriyaköy Formation, with the implication that Late Cretaceous volcanism terminated in the İstanbul region during or prior to the late Campanian. The faunas show a great resemblance to those from the late Campanian type section at Aubeterre (SW France) and late Campanian fauna of Pyrenean Basin (N Spain), and correspond to the most eastern record of the European Faunal Province of the Tethys.

Larger foraminifera and associated fauna from the Maastrichtian of the southern valencian Prebaetic sector (E Iberian Peninsula) The benthic foraminiferal assemblage and the associated fauna found in the Upper Cretaceous deposits of the Serra de la Solana, Valencia (Spain) have been revised. The study has allowed us to confirm the presence of the foraminiferal species Hellenocyclina beotica Reichel, Siderolites aff. calcitrapoides Lamarck, Orbitoides apiculata Schlumberger, Orbitoides gensacicus (Leymerie) and Omphalocyclus macroporus (Lamarck), as stated by previous authors. In addition, the revision has permitted to identify some other species, never cited before in Serra de la Solana and neighbour regions in Iberian Peninsula, such as Fissoelphidium operculiferum Smout and Selimina cf. spinalis Inan and two different morphotypes of rotaliids that we have left in open nomenclature, namely, Rotaliidae indet. sp. 1 and Rotaliidae indet. sp. 2. The rudists and echinoid found associated to these benthic foraminifera have been also revised. The rudist species found are Hippurites radiosus Des Moulins, Hippurites cornucopiae Defrance, Hippurites cf. lamarcki Douvillé, and Apricardia sp., the two latter cited in Serra de la Solana for the first time. The echinoid assemblage is composed of the species Pygopyrina darderi (Lambert), Linthia payeni (Coquand) and Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (Leske). The whole assemblage, typical of shallow-water platform environments, is Upper Maastrichtian in age and shows some differences in respect other contemporaneous asseblages from other paleogeographical areas.

Upper Cretaceous wedge‐top to foredeep architecture in the United Arab Emirates: Insights from the Faiyah Anticline

Facies architecture and benthic foraminiferal biostratigraphy were interpreted to reconstruct the depositional environments of the Upper Campanian-Maastrichtian Qahlah and Simsima formations in the Faiyah Anticline Range, north-central United Arab Emirates. Obduction of the Oman ophiolite controlled the palaeo-configuration of the Upper Cretaceous deposits and resulted in an irregular palaeogeography which caused rapid lateral and vertical facies changes and the building up of 19 types of facies. The Qahlah Formation was deposited dominantly as an inner clastic wedge facies association containing alluvial fan, alluvial plain, and proximal shallow marine mass-flow deposits. The Simsima Formation is represented by deposits characteristic of variable settings, including intertidal, restricted lagoon, inner edge shallow platform, and forereef shelf that formed in the outer carbonate wedge. Towards the southwest of the Faiyah Anticline Range, the Simsima Formation exhibits distal turbidites and contains remobilized carbonate conglomerates and marl that were deposited in a foredeep environment. This lateral variation has been caused by tectonics associated with increased global sea level. A tectonically-driven long-time hiatus caused the absence of Danian age strata. From the sequence stratigraphic perspective, three forced sequence boundaries are reported within the Upper Campanian-Maastrichtian successions. This sequence boundaries match well with those documented from the entire Arabian Plate.
