Laue lens for astrophysics: Extensive comparison between mosaic, curved, and quasi-mosaic crystals

Abstract: With the aim of concentrating hard X-and γ-rays coming from celestial sources in the 100-1000 keV energy range, the concept of Laue lens was introduced more than 50 years ago. Crystals are the core of a Laue lens, since they focus the incoming X-rays through Bragg diffraction. For concrete applications, crystals characterized by high diffraction reflectivity are needed along with high-resolution focusing of diffracted photons. Here, an extensive comparison of the types of crystals proposed so far is presented.… Show more

“…Curved crystals are optimal candidates for focusing a hard X-ray beam with high efficiency (Bellucci, Camattari, Guidi, Neri & Barriè re, 2011;Camattari, 2016). We tested the sandblasted samples using -ray diffraction on the DIGRA facility at the ILL, a facility specifically built for characterizing instrumentation for astrophysics.…”

“…The first issue is currently studied by the scientific community working on X-ray manipulation. Several types of crystals have been proposed so far to be used as optical elements for hard X-ray diffraction (Camattari 2016). Here, we analyse the case of a Laue lens composed of curved diffracting planes (CDP) crystals.…”

“…However, there is not currently a practical telescope to focus gamma-ray photons. Laue lenses to focus ∼MeV photons are just now being developed, and the implications for astronomical observatories are still being explored (Camattari, 2016).…”
