Layer by layer synthesis of zinc-iron layered hydroxy sulfate for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution from ethanol in alkali media

Abstract: This paper proposes a method for producing nanocomposite electrocatalytic coatings based on zinc-iron layered hydroxy sulfate Zn 2 Fe 4 (OH) 12 SO 4 • 8H 2 O and iron(III) hydroxide Fe(OH) 3 using the successive ionic layer deposition (SILD) method. The obtained materials were investigated with the methods of SEM and EDX, XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, and also were analyzed their electrocatalytic performance. These compounds are formed on the surface of the substrate in nanosheets shape with an average size of 6-17 … Show more

“…Nanostructured catalysts represent a separate area of materials for personalized energy. In this area, effective catalysts based on nanoparticles of d-and f-element oxides and hydroxides have been developed for the electrocatalytic production of hydrogen from water-alcohol solutions [327][328][329][330][331], photocatalysts based on simple and complex oxides [123, 135-139, 233, 332], carbon monoxide oxidation catalysts [333][334][335][336], and acid-base n-hexane conversion catalysts [337][338][339]. Obtained in the form of isometric nanoparticles, nanorods, nanoplates, and porous compositions (Fig.…”

“…This method is based on the successive and repeated adsorption on the surface of the cations and anions substrate, which interact and give a nanolayer of an insoluble compound. The SILD method has great potential for practical use to form nanolayers on the surface of the products of complex shapes and has been used earlier, for example, for the synthesis of NiO 1+x •nH 2 O [13], MnOOH [14], CoOOH [15], AgMnO 2 [16], Co-doped Cu(OH) 2 [17], CoO-NiO solid solution [18], and also Zn-Fe layered double hydroxysulfate [19,20] which can be used as materials for electrocatalytic reforming of ethanol.…”

“…The layer-by-layer method is one technique that allows the synthesis of the nanocomposites mentioned above [28][29][30]. It is based on the sequential absorption of precursors on the substrate surface, followed by the removal of excess reagents.…”
