Layout Planning in Healthcare Facilities: A Systematic Review

Abstract: This study presents a systematic review of the literature on layout planning in healthcare facilities. The review includes 81 articles from journals, conferences, books, and other documents. Articles were classified in two groups according to their main contents including (i) concepts and guidelines and (ii) techniques and tools to assist in layout planning in healthcare facilities. Results indicate that a great variety of concepts and tools have been used to solve layout problems in healthcare. However, healt… Show more

“…Construction of new or renovation of existing health centers requires a large budget and a long time. Therefore, layout planning is a critical task as layout designs must be developed based on a well-studied strategic plan while considering the effect on customer experience and service quality; confusing layouts can add to customer' anxiety [38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46]. The team used a combination of the Process (functionality) layout, cellular manufacturing, and cellular layout.…”

“…Whilst Ulrich et al (2010) highlight the relationships of how healthcare built environments can impact patients and their families, staff and organizational outcomes. In addition, a number of systematic reviews have been conducted around a particular space, care setting or a particular patient category, for example Bartlett (2013) reviewed research evidence related to design features that can be used to create an optimal inpatient psychiatric patient, whilst Taylor et al (2018) and Voigt et al (2018) have reviewed evidence related to the benefits of private-patient rooms, and Benitez, et al (2019) conducted a systematic review on layout planning in Healthcare Facilities.…”

“…Ulrich et al (2010) highlight the relationships of how healthcare built environments can impact patients and their families, staff and organisational outcomes. In addition, a number of systematic reviews have been conducted around a particular space, care setting or a particular patient category; for example, Linebaugh (2013) reviewed research evidence related to design features that can be used to create an optimal inpatient psychiatric patient, Taylor et al (2018) and Voigt et al (2018) have reviewed evidence related to the benefits of private-patient rooms and Benitez et al (2019) conducted a systematic review on layout planning in healthcare facilities. When considered alongside the many individual pieces of published EBD research scattered across number of publications, such systematic reviews seem to be more popular among both researchers and practitioners and have created an increased awareness about EBD through their comprehensive approach.…”

“…Apple's layout procedure is also an effective facility layout planning tool which considers primary parameters related to the facility layout. It focuses on coordination of departments in a particular flow and analyzes the interdepartmental satisfaction level, which in result gave the best-suited layout output (Benitez et al, 2019). This procedure can also be applied to a multi-floor plan with the manually generated space-filling curve.…”
