“…Although most male genitalia in beetles appear symmetric at first glance (see e.g. Iablokoff‐Khnzorian, 1980), countless deviations from symmetry can be detected and have been reported in the literature. In some cases, these deviations are only slight, e.g.…”

“…(Lymexylidae) (Sharp & Muir, 1912). Penis (=mesal lobe sensu Neboiss, 1984): (0) nearly reaches up to the tips of the parameres; (1) reaches up to the base of the apical hooks; (2) does not reach up to the base of the apical hooks. Most Coleoptera have quite a long penis that nearly reaches up to the tips of the parameres (Sharp & Muir, 1912; Jeannel, 1955; Iablokoff‐Khnzorian, 1980). In some species of Archostemata the penis is so short that it only comes up to the distal third of each paramere. Penis distinctly compressed : (0) no; (1) yes.The apex of the penis is usually rounded.…”

“…Regrettably, the results of those important investigations remained almost fully ignored. Only Ponomarenko (1969) repeated the striking peculiarities which Edwards had observed in the male genitalia of Priacma serrata while Iablokoff-Khnzorian (1980), noting the Priacma-type aedeagus, questioned Edwards' interpretations of its structures. Lawrence (1999) wrote that "the aedeagus of all modern Archostemata (including Micromalthidae and Crowsoniellidae) is of a distinctive type described by Sharp & Muir (1912) as having peculiarities which are "indications of an old relationship with Insects of another Order (perhaps something that preceded the existing Sialidae)".…”
