Various municipal solid waste management (MSWM) innovations have emerged in developing countries in face of the challenges posed by increasing waste generation and poor MSWM practice. We present a methodology to assess the potential sustainability impact of MSWM innovations in a holistic manner. The Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis (LCSA) framework and the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals (SDGs) facilitated the methodology development. The result of applying the methodology to the case of waste bank (WB) in Bandung City shows that WB potentially generates the greatest sustainability impact in the resource recovery phase and the smallest impact in the collection and final disposal phase. All negative impacts could arise in the economic dimension. Surprisingly, WB as a national strategy to achieve 3Rs would not effectively solve Bandung City’s landfill problem. Almost all SDGs would benefit from the WB program under the assumed conditions. This methodology will facilitate the decision-making in MSWM by (1) comparing available innovations to find the optimal solution, (2) identifying the hot spots and taking measures to combat the negative impacts, (3) providing the basis for monitoring the implementation process and the ex-post performance assessment.

Salah satu komponen penting pada pengelolaan sampah adalah pengumpulan dan pengangkutan sampah. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengevaluasi sistem pengumpulan dan pengangkutan sampah di Kabupaten Subang, tepatnya di tiga TPS Kecamatan Subang yaitu TPS Pasar Pujasera, TPS Jalitri, dan TPS Pasar Terminal. Metode evaluasi dilakukan dengan mengidentifikasi sumber dan timbulan sampah, daerah cakupan pelayanan, jumlah alat serta jenis armada sampah di Kecamatan Subang. Dari hasil analisis jumlah timbulan sampah di Kecamatan Subang yang dihasilkan semakin meningkat setiap tahunnya dan pada tahun 2021 menjadi 33.597.684,98 kg/tahun dengan jumlah penduduk sebanyak 139.046 jiwa. Adapun produksi timbulan sampah yang dihasilkan tidak terangkut di 3 TPS ke TPA Jalupang yaitu sebesar 24.800 kg/hari. Pengumpulan dan pengangkutan sampah di Kecamatan Subang juga tidak dilakukan berdasarkan jenis sampah terpilah karena pada saat pewadahan dan pengumpulan sampah belum dilakukan pemilahan sampah sesuai dengan jenis sampah yang ada. Jumlah armada pengangkut sampah di Kecamatan Subang saat ini terdiri dari 14 unit diantaranya 6 unit dump truk dan 8 unit arm roll truk yang dapat mengangkut sekitar 32.400 kg/hari dan rata-rata ritasi 1 rit/hari. Sedangkan produksi timbulan sampah yang dihasilkan per hari di 3 TPS sebesar 80.419 kg/hari

Municipal solid waste leachate, a kind of wastewater, can severely damage the environment and contaminate the groundwater because of its high organic matter and toxic heavy metal concentrations. Due to its complex composition, this wastewater must be properly treated prior to being discharged into the environment. In recent decades, several biological approaches (e.g., bioremediation, phytoremediation, and bioreactors) and physicochemical processes (e.g., coagulation/flocculation, air stripping, and advanced oxidation processes) have proven effective at removing the organic load and the toxicity of this effluent. Physicochemical treatments have been applied as pretreatment or post-treatment steps for biological processes, but these methods do not always provide satisfactory results and can cause secondary pollution in some cases. In addition, owing to the high concentrations of organic matter, ammonia, and trace metals in landfill leachate, combined approaches to leachate treatment have been reported to be efficient. This article highlights the advantages and drawbacks of these approaches to the treatment of leachate by providing an updated overview of the various methods that have been successfully applied in this field. Further studies should focus on improving landfill leachate treatment to maximize removal performance.
