Psychological empowerment is a cultural, social, or psychological process that enhances individual control and autonomy over thoughts, emotions, and behaviors by developing attributes like self-identity, autonomy, and self-efficacy, which are integral to success in modern organizational management, particularly in service sectors like nursing. This study aimed to analyze the study focus, thematic trends, and evolution of studies on nurse psychological empowerment by using bibliometric analysis. The articles on nurses' psychological empowerment were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database from its inception to November 30, 2023. The R package “bibliometrix” was used to conduct the data analysis and graphical presentation. A total of 188 publications on nurses' psychological empowerment were included. Publications were mainly from the USA, Canada, and China. The most frequent keywords included “empowerment”, “psychological empowerment”, “nurses”, “nursing”, “job satisfaction”, “structural empowerment”, “burnout” and “leadership”, the most frequent topics were “power”, “settings”, “work satisfaction”, and “turnover”. This bibliometric analysis identified the research trend of nurses’ psychological empowerment in the past 25 years, and this subject has already become an active field of study in nursing research. In addition, nurse retention-related themes such as job satisfaction, and work environment have become hot topics in current research while structural equation model-based themes have been less studied.

AimsTo identify and characterize the thematic foci, structure and evolution of nursing research on surveillance and patient safety.DesignBibliometric analysis.MethodsBibliometric methods were employed to analyse 1145 articles, using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer software.Data SourceThe Scopus bibliographic database was searched on April 7, 2023.ResultsA keyword co‐occurrence analysis found the most frequently occurring keywords to be: patient safety, nursing, nurses, adverse events, monitoring, critical care, quality improvement, vital signs, safety, alarm fatigue, education, nursing care, surveillance, clinical alarms, failure to rescue, evidence‐based practice, acute care, clinical deterioration, communication, intensive care. Network mapping, clustering and time‐tracking of the keywords revealed the focal themes, structure and evolution of the research field.ConclusionBy assessing critical areas of the nursing research field, this study extends and enriches the current discourse on surveillance and patient safety for nursing researchers and practitioners. Critical challenges still have to be met by nurses, however, including the failure to rescue deteriorating patients. Further knowledge and understanding of surveillance and patient safety must be successfully translated from research to practice.Implications for the ProfessionThis study highlights the gaps in nursing knowledge with regard to surveillance and patient safety and encourages nursing professionals to turn to evidence‐based surveillance practices.ImpactIn addressing the problem of surveillance and its effect on patient safety, this study found that, in most clinical care settings, preventing failures to rescue and adverse patient outcomes still remains a challenge for the nursing profession. This study should have an impact on nursing academics' future research themes and on nursing professionals' future clinical practices.Reporting MethodRelevant EQUATOR guidelines have been adhered to by employing recognized bibliometric reporting methods.

Trends of publications on transformational leadership in nursing: a bibliometric analysis

Purpose This study aims to analyze the structure of publications on transformational leadership in nursing and determine its evolution process through a bibliometric analysis. Design/methodology/approach It is a descriptive bibliometric study. Data were collected on October 24, 2022, from the Web of Science and analyzed using Excel, VOSviewer, HistCite and Bibliometrix R programs. Findings A total of 348 studies conducted by 962 authors and published between 1990 and 2021 were included. It was found that 84.5% of these publications were original articles and 97.7% were published in English. The studies are from 82 different journals and were carried out by researchers from 43 countries. The most productive country was the USA (n = 151). Research limitations/implications Only one database was used to search for studies. The searches were limited to the nursing category, and only studies published up to 2021 were included. Another important point is that, although there were no language limitations for the field literature search, English keywords were used; thus, the search can be considered semi-limited. It is believed that more comprehensive search strategies may generate different findings. Originality/value Two main themes were identified as the studies carried out in the field of transformational leadership in nursing, generally, directly or indirectly addressed the effects of this style of leadership either on nurses’ performance/job satisfaction or on quality care/patient safety; however, a gap was observed in the literature in the area of nursing education. Researchers can be inspired by the results of the present study, by learning about the focus of published research on transformational leadership, which will encourage them to plan new studies to improve nursing education, nursing care, nursing management and working conditions of nurses. Through the results of this study, it is also possible to learn about countries and researchers for possible collaborations in future studies.
