Abstract: Leadership skills are increasingly important for future surgeons who need knowledge of organizational structure and policy, management strategy, team collaboration and behaviours to deliver high‐quality health care in resource‐constrained environments. This article reviews the literature on leadership in postgraduate surgical education, what surgical trainees currently learn about leadership and considers how surgical trainees can develop their skills to become competent surgical leaders.
