DevOps is a set of agile and lean practices and principles in the context of software product development aiming to decrease mean time-to-market and mean time-to-recover-from-failure through a shift in organizational mindset-skillset-toolset. There is literature to suggest that adopting DevOps has been challenging in practice and that a particular leadership style is necessary to lead DevOps adoption. There are studies to suggest that DevOps leadership is mainly related to transformational leadership characteristics. In this research, a mixed methods approach is used. Initially, semistructured interviews are conducted with 30 EMEA (Europe, Middle-East and Africa) agile and lean practitioners holding more than 10 years of practitioner experience (81%) from the private and public sectors. The contribution also includes an analysis and evaluation of a survey completed by 250 participants of which 93% works in Europe and Middle East and 76% has held previous leadership positions. By looking to recent literature we identified agile, lean and DevOps practices and principles. In addition, we identify benefits and inhibitors to DevOps adoption and its leadership. Our results suggest that deep rooted organizational culture and lack of DevOps definition clarity are usually considered impediments to DevOps adoption followed by poor communication and collaboration. Our results also show that certain DevOps adoption leadership characteristics are relevant to transformational leadership and servant leadership. The research results also indicate that the DevOps adoption leadership role is linked to certain metrics.

Testing is a complex phase in DevOps process due to need of an automated process that provides feedback at different strategies of continuous development and operations pipeline. Software organization face several challenges during the testing phase due to lack of understanding on testing best practices for the DevOps paradigm. The objective of this study is to prioritize DevOps best testing practices, which can facilitate the selection of testing practices during DevOps process. To perform this research, we have extended the work done by Hornbeek, using the 15 DevOps testing practices discussed in his study. First, we categorize the test practices against culture, automation, lean, measurement, and sharing (CALMS) pillars of DevOps adoption principles. Next, a questionnaire‐based survey was conducted to collect feedback from industry practitioners on the DevOps test practices and their categorization against CALMS criteria. Finally, we applied Interpretive Structure Modeling (ISM) to find the interrelationship between CALMS criteria, and fuzzy TOPSIS was used to prioritize the DevOps test practices that will assist practitioners to better manage the testing activities during DevOps process.

The contribution emphasizes research undertaken in highly structured software-intensive organisations and the transitional challenges associated to agile, lean and DevOps practices andprinciples adoption journeys. The approach undertaken to gain insights to research questions resulted in data collected, through a series of interviews, by thirtypractitioners from EMEA region (Czech Republic, Estonia, Italy, Georgia, Greece, The Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, UAE, UK) working in ninedifferent industry domains. A set of agile, lean and DevOps practices and principles that organisations are choosing to include in their adoption journeys towardsDevOps-oriented structures is identified. The most frequently adopted practices of structured service management that can contribute to the success of DevOps practices adoption are also identified. Results indicate that software product development andoperations roles in DevOps-oriented organisationscan benefit from specific leadership styles.
