Leaf abaxial immunity to powdery mildew in Arabidopsis is conferred by multiple defense mechanisms

Ying Wu,
W Kyle Sexton,
Qiong Zhang
et al.

Abstract: Powdery mildew (PM) fungi are obligate biotrophic pathogens that only invade plant epidermal cells. There are two epidermal surfaces for any plant leaves: the adaxial (upper) side and the abaxial (lower) side. While both leaf surfaces can be susceptible to adapted PM fungi in many plant species, there have been observations of leaf abaxial immunity in some plant species including Arabidopsis. The genetic basis of such leaf abaxial immunity remains unknown. In this study, we tested a series of Arabidopsis mutan… Show more

“…This disease, which has a global distribution, affects nearly all common crops and is a major concern within the plant pathology community due to the severe economic losses it causes annually worldwide ( Lebeda et al., 2024 ; Lu et al., 2024 ; Stack et al., 2024 ; Xue et al., 2024 ). Moreover, research on powdery mildew in certain key crops and model plants has progressed to the stage of investigating immune mechanisms at a molecular level ( Wu et al., 2024 ). Honeysuckle is not immune to powdery mildew, a disease recognized as one of the most devastating to its cultivation, particularly in large-scale production.…”
