Leaf area estimation in a sugar beet cultivar by linear models

Abstract: An indirect method of leaf area measurement for Rizor sugar beet cultivar was tested. Leaves were sampled during two growing seasons in a Randomised Complete Block Design experiment. For 2002 samplings, leaf area [cm 2 ] was linearly correlated with maximum leaf width [cm] using all leaf samples (r 2 = 0.83, p<0.001) or using the means of the 8 sampling occasions (r 2 = 0.97, p<0.001). Correlations between leaf area and leaf midvein length [cm] were weaker (r 2 = 0.75, p<0.001 and r 2 = 0.93, p<0.001, respecti… Show more

“…Dried seed mass minus any dispersal structures has been recommended as the best and easiest method of seed measurement (Westoby 1998), with larger seeds producing seedlings better able to survive a variety of seedling hazards (Westoby et al 1996). We chose leaf width as a proxy for leaf area as leaf width has proven a good indirect measurement for leaf area (Tsialtas and Maslaris 2005;Williams and Martinson 2003). We believe early leaf size reflects plant fitness as early leaves are formed in the dormant buds the previous autumn (Critchfield 1971;Kikuzawa 1983).…”

“…Such information on estimation of leaf area in clary sage is not available. The procedure used for developing the model has been used earlier by Tsialtas and Maslaris (2005); Tsialtas et al (2008) andFallavo et al (2008). The aim of this study was, therefore, to establish a LA prediction model based on L and W measurements and to test the accuracy of the proposed model for LA estimation, and to characterize variability within different accessions of clary sage.…”

“…Many studies have been reported and propose non-destructive equations to estimate the growth of leaves in crops ( Tsialtas and Maslaris, 2005;Peksen, 2007;Olfati et al, 2010;Rouphael et al, 2010) and weeds (Carvalho et al, 2011a;Carvalho et al, 2011b). However, specifically for Cerrado woody species, there are not any models like the one proposed in the present paper, and consequently, experiments have to be conducted in a way that leaves must be excised.…”
