Leaf biomass determination on woody shrub species in semiarid zones

Abstract: Leaf biomass over 20 native species from thornscrub canopies was evaluated by five nondestructive allometric methods and compared in order to determine the most accurate estimating procedure. Indirect relationships between leaf biomass and some ecological characteristics of the plants may be found by using regression models. Ecological and morphological characteristics of these species were determined using a structural analysis. No single standard method estimated leaf biomass for all species on site due to t… Show more

“…Agroforestry systems with trees or shrub alleys within annual crop fields can be an option to reduce the fragility of certain agricultural production systems (Wick & Tiessen, 2008;Foroughbakhch et al, 2009;Li et al, 2009;Kurppa et al, 2010;Sousa et al, 2010;Lima et al, 2011). Those systems produce a considerable amount of biomass that can be incorporated into the soil, transferring nutrients from the trees to the crops (Bertalot et al, 2010;Munroe & Isaac, 2014).…”

“…The regional climate is defined as semi-arid and sub-humid [(A) C (Wo)] in the scheme of Köppen modified by García (2004) over 40 ºC during the summer, and frost from December to March. Mean annual precipitation is 749 mm (Foroughbakhch et al 2001), with the precipitation ratio to free evaporation of 0.48 and precipitation to potential evaporation of 0.62 (Foroughbakhch et al 2009). Selection of the species.…”

“…The Tamaulipan Thornscrub is a vegetation of the semiarid zone from the coastal plains of the Gulf of Mexico to the southern shoreline of Texas, U.S.A. (Foroughbakhch et al 2005(Foroughbakhch et al , 2009. This ecosystem presents a high species richness and diversity of tree and shrub species (Heiseke & Foroughbakhch 1985, Alanís-Rodríguez et al 2008, Mora-Donjuán et al 2013.…”

“…The cattle's ranching was practiced for 350 years in some areas of Tamaulipan scrubland from Northeastern Mexico. Long-term consequences of grazing were quality and quantity losses in forage species (Foroughbakhch et al, 2009). Currently, shrub species of the Fabaceae family, particularly A. amentacea and P. texana, are part of the dominant species of this area in Northeastern Mexico (Estrada and Jurado, 2005).…”
