Leaf Nutrient Status of Commercially Grown Strawberries in Latvia, 2014–2022: A Possible Yield-Limiting Factor

Abstract: The present study was carried out to evaluate the leaf nutrient status of commercially grown strawberries in Latvia during 2014–2022. The results of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo and B in 200 strawberry leaf samples from different strawberry-producing farms were analysed over three periods: 2014–2016, 2017–2019, and 2020–2022. According to leaf analyses, plant fertilization was only partly well managed by the growers. During the research period, strawberries in Latvia were generally sufficiently suppl… Show more

“…Leaf analysis is an effective approach to monitor the nutritional status of crop cultures and help to diagnose potential deficiencies [18]. NPK nutrients influence strawberry production, and its deficiencies decrease pigment formation causing subsequent leaf color changes from green to yellowish or purple [19].…”

“…Quick NO3 nutrient analysis after sixty and ninety days should be 550 and 400ppm, respectively [17]. Another researchers collected ten young, fully expanded leaves from the plants every 3 weeks for analysis of total N and Nitrate-N (NO3-N) [16,18]. The sensor must be calibrated beforehand and therefore it must be clean.…”

“…Moreover, in the various sites visited and belonging to the three agroecological zones of Cameroon where strawberry cultivation is currently done, the variations in temperature and rainfall are totally different. Furthermore, Saeid [40] and Osvalde [41], also attribute the appearance of these malformations to the quality of hydromineral nutrition. However, good mineral nutrition in plants depends on several factors such as the pH of the soil, the physicochemical characteristics of the soil, the practices of fertilization, the type of fertilizer applied, the climate, etc.…”

“…In India, the area under the strawberry cultivation area is around 2000 ha (Anonymous 2021a). Strawberry requires the higher amount of nutrients for production of a better crop (Osvalde et al 2023). Farmers rely on chemical fertilizers and insecticides to improve crop yield.…”
