Extraction and recovery of protein from abundant plant biomass is one potential way to improve the economic feasibility of biorefineries. However, valorization of the protein fraction is challenging due to its low yield (kg protein extraction/kg biomass). In order to reveal the limiting operation parameters, the alkaline extraction process of protein from Caragana korshinskii Kom. was investigated by an integrative analysis of kinetics and thermodynamics. Both a two-site kinetic extraction model and a second-order model indicated that particle size is the most pivotal factor affecting protein extraction yield. In a two-site model, most proteins are extracted quickly from broken cells, while protein removal from the intact cells takes much longer; these are the faster and slower processes, respectively. A decrease of particle size from 20-40 to 60-80 mesh resulted in a decrease of C2 (protein yield in the slower process) from 14.02 to 7.32 mg g(-1), but a great increase of C1 (protein yield in the faster process) from 20.61 to 59.07 mg g(-1) . However, the protein yield was dominated by the faster process when the average particle size is under 80 mesh. The maximum initial extraction rate was 72.20 mg g(-1) min(-1) with the particle size of 60-80 mesh, almost ninefold of that with 20-40 mesh. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the enthalpy change (ΔH) and entropy change (ΔS) in the protein extraction process were calculated as 21.08 kJ mol(-1) and 84.76 J K(-1), respectively. The standard free energy (ΔG) had a magnitude from -3.77 to -5.46, suggesting that the extraction process was spontaneous and physically feasible.

Light supplementation can increase crop yield in greenhouses by promoting photosynthesis and plant growth. However, the high energy costs associated with light supplementation are a predominant factor that limits development and profit improvement of controlled environment agriculture. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are a promising technology that has tremendous potential to improve irradiance efficiency and to replace traditionally used horticultural lighting. Compared with traditional light sources (e.g., high-pressure sodium lamps and metal halide lamps) used in crop production, LEDs have distinct advantages, such as their small size, long lifetime and high photoelectric conversion efficiency. Most importantly, as a monochromatic light source, the spectrum of LEDs can be adjusted based on plant growth requirements. This project aimed to investigate energy-use efficiency, vegetable nutrition and photosynthesis improvement of light supplementation in a protected horticulture system. In the initial phase, the effects of LED light on plant growth and light-use efficiency for pak choi and photosynthetic performance were investigated. The results showed that the highest fresh and dry weight and leaf area were observed under red and blue LED light, with the blue light percentage at 23%. Compared with fluorescent lamps (FL) with photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) at 220 μmol m -2 s -1 , the light-use efficiency increased by 55, 114 and 115% for mixed red and blue LEDs with PPFD at 100, 150 and 220 μmol m -2 s -1 , respectively. Monochromatic red-and blue-light LEDs resulted in significant decreases in P n of tomato plants, but the stomatal conductance (G s ) for monochromatic blue LEDs was higher than that for FL. The effect of light spectrum composition on lettuce nutrition quality was also studied. Continuous light with combined red, green and blue LEDs exhibited a remarkable decrease in nitrate. Moreover, continuous LED light for 24 h significantly increased phenolic compound content and free-radical scavenging capacity in lettuce leaf.

Corn kernels or seeds that remain a er harvest can germinate and become a troublesome volunteer plant where bean crops are grown. e objective of this study was to evaluate the e ect of time of emergence of volunteer corn on growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll uorescence in bean plants, competition for soil and light and light resources. e study was conducted in completely randomised experimental design, in 2×2×2+2 factorial scheme with four replications, involving two bean cultivars in competition with volunteer corn, emerging seven days before and simultaneously with beans, besides the partitioning of the competition by soil and light, just light and two controls without competition. We measured the levels of chlorophyll a, b, total and carotenoids, parameters related to chlorophyll uorescence and bean growth variables. Volunteer corn was more competitive when it emerged seven days before the beans. When competition was established by light resource, there was a reduction in photosynthetic pigments and morphological variables of the bean plants. When competition by soil and light resources occurred, there was a reduction not only in photosynthetic pigments and morphological characteristics, but also in the chlorophyll uorescence variables. ere were signi cant correlations between the growth variables of the bean plants and chlorophyll uorescence, which makes it an important analytical tool for quantifying the stress caused by weeds.
