Leaf rust and stripe rust resistance genes transferred to common wheat from Triticum dicoccoides

Abstract: Linked leaf rust and stripe rust resistance genes introduced from Triticum dicoccoides protected common wheat seedlings against a range of pathotypes of the respective pathogens. The genes were chromosomally mapped using monosomic and telosomic analyses, C-banding and RFLPs. The data indicated that an introgressed region is located on wheat chromosome arm 6BS. The introgressed region did not pair with the 'Chinese Spring' 6BS arm during meiosis possibly as a result of reduced homology, but appeared to pair wit… Show more

“…Inoculation procedures were as described by McCallum and Seto-Goh (2002). Genetic studies with the leaf and stripe rust resistance genes were done at Stellenbosch employing inoculation procedures described by Marais et al (2005a). P. triticina pathotype UVPrt8 and P. striiformis f. sp.…”

“…YrLM168a is likely different from Yr4a and Yr4b as it is effective against to CYR31, CYR32, and CYR33. Yr35 from Triticum dicoccoides has been located on chromosome 6BS with monosomic and telosomic analyses, C-banding, and RFLPs (Marais et al 2005). Yr36 from T. turgidum ssp.…”

“…Sixty-four genes for leaf rust resistance have been genetically characterised and formally named (McIntosh et al 2008). Resistance genes Lr3, Lr14a, Lr23, Lr53, Lr61 and Lr64 occur in both tetraploid and hexaploid wheats (Dyck and Samborski 1970;McIntosh and Dyck 1975;Marais et al 2005;HerreraFoessel et al 2005;Herrera-Foessel et al 2007). For example, Lr3 was mapped on chromosome 6BL both in durum wheat and common wheat genotypes (Herrera-Foessel et al 2007).…”
