Lean-ing Method in an Emergency Department of the Italian Epicenter of the COVID-19 Outbreak: When the Algorithm Makes Difference

Abstract: The Lean method entails a set of standardized processes intending to optimize resources, reduce waste, and improve results. Lean has been proposed as an operative model for the COVID-19 outbreak. Herein, we summarized data resulted from the Lean model adoption in an Emergency Department of the Lombardy region, the Italian epicenter of the pandemic, to critically appraise its effectiveness and feasibility. The Lean algorithm was applied in the Humanitas Clinical and Research Hospital, Milan, north of Italy. At … Show more

“…Regarding the length of hospital stay, literature evidence reports that this would be related to multiple factors, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic [ 44 , 45 , 46 ]. Several factors could contribute to the lack of a significant association observed between antithrombotic therapy and the length of hospital stay.…”

“…Last but not least, this special issue also published a practice-based research [9]. This paper proposed a Leaning approach as an operative model for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, so the authors aggregated data from the Lean model's implementation in an Emergency Department, the pandemic's epicenter, to critically assess its efficacy and feasibility.…”

“…To improve the management of radiological services in the COVID-19 pandemic, the health management model called lean healthcare is an ideal candidate for optimizing the work processes. Its tools have been applied in this pandemic scenario, helping the performance, facing challenges, such as staff shortages and rising costs, and providing high-quality services, while also considering the current financial restrictions [ 20 ]. As evidenced by the literature, implementing lean healthcare offers remarkable opportunities to improve overcrowding, costs, patient flow, difficulty in screening, and elimination of inefficient processes (i.e., waiting, movement, and overprocessing) [ 20 ].…”
