“…Pristilli (p.43) defines learner analytics and explains their purpose: 46 learning analytics focuses on “the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs.” This is a prime example of institutions turning to business intelligence techniques that utilize prescriptive interventions to augment and support student success. …”

“…As more and more educational data are available, learning analytics use static and dynamic data about learners and learning environments to assess, elicit, and analyse it for real-time modelling, prediction and optimising of learning processes (Ifenthaler, 2015). Many studies show a positive impact on learning analytics regarding student retention in higher education by identifying student at risk, providing personalised feedback and guidance to academic support services (Ifenthaler et al, 2019;Pistilli, 2017;Sclater et al, 2016).…”

“…Revision or redesign of online courses is a common practice in higher education. It promotes instructors' critical and ongoing examination of the learning goals and content, demonstrates responsiveness to student feedback and behavior, and may address student retention issues (Kebritchi et al, 2017;Pistilli, 2017;Spiceland et al, 2015). A common goal of course revision is to increase student success and reduce course withdrawal rates (Sullivan et al, 2020).…”

“…While learning analytics offers robust data that can be used to drive decision-making at all levels of the institution, the insights of instructors, who best understand their students, content, and specific learning context, cannot be overlooked. These educators can play a pivotal role in using learning analytics to directly improve student success in their courses and contribute to the college's overall student completion goals (Morris, 2016;Phillips & Horowitz, 2017;Pistilli, 2017). However, institutional conditions must set the stage for faculty to use learning analytics data in this manner (Lonn et al, 2017).…”
