Learner engagement and teaching effectiveness in livestreamed versus in‐person CME

Abstract: Introduction Engaging learners in continuing medical education (CME) is challenging. Recently, CME courses have transitioned to livestreamed CME, with learners viewing live, in‐person courses online. The authors aimed to (1) compare learner engagement and teaching effectiveness in livestreamed with in‐person CME and (2) determine how livestream engagement and teaching effectiveness is associated with (A) interactivity metrics, (B) presentation characteristics and (C) medical knowledge. Methods A 3‐year, non‐ra… Show more

“…Chalk talks can be recreated using virtual whiteboards and annotation; tracing neuroanatomical pathways can use engaging online modules that allow learners to more easily visualize anatomic structures; and didactic patient interviews can be conducted virtually, offering benefits for both patient convenience and offering insights into their home living environment. When employed effectively, virtual tools such as polling and annotation encourage active learning, 18 which promotes deeper understanding and retention. [19][20][21] These can also encourage more universal participation by allowing students to respond anonymously and by whichever means they feel most comfortable.…”

“…In addition to these illustrative examples of librarian delivered CE, there is compelling discussion that time constraints are a barrier to providing CE to HCPs [ 13 ], and that beyond the library “engaging learners can be especially challenging for continuing medical education (CME)” [ 14 ].…”
