Learning Engineering with EPS@ISEP: Developing Projects for Smart Sustainable Cities

Abstract: This paper presents an overview on how the European Project Semester capstone programme offered by the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (EPS@ISEP) fosters learning by challenging engineering, business and product development undergraduates to address sustainability issues afflicting cities and communities nowadays. This will be done by analysing the reports and the learning journey of three multicultural and multidisciplinary EPS@ISEP teams during the design, development and test of a smart billboard,… Show more

“…Students who learn through PBL develop better self-learning competencies, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and multidisciplinary work. Moreover, they experience increased motivation compared with students who have access to learning only through teaching-centered models [37,38]. Students are likely to have fewer theoretical problems because they are more involved in class development [39], and therefore, they get higher scores than students learning through teaching-centered models [40].…”

“…There are some other studies conducting on the smart billboards that serve other purposes. For example, a smart billboard is designed for monitoring urban areas and displaying real-time information related with the air quality [14]. An innovative digital billboard counts the number of people that are watching their advertisements [15].…”

“…This situation causes students not to see the actual case related to engineering. Apart from gaining practical experience and new knowledge while undergoing industrial training, the students also could practice the knowledge they have learned in class [10], [20].…”
