Lectin-Conjugated Liposomes as Biocompatible, Bioadhesive Drug Carriers for the Management of Oral Ulcerative Lesions

Abstract: Oral ulcerative lesions are painful and debilitating, particularly for immunosuppressed patients undergoing chemotherapeutic/irradiation treatment. Their clinical management requires multiple drugs to be administered simultaneously. Current formulations available to patients require frequent dosing, leading to poor compliance and suboptimal clinical outcomes. In this study, we prepared wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-conjugated liposomes (WGA liposomes) to serve as bioadhesive drug carriers that can encapsulate va… Show more

“…In particular, liposomes decorated by crosslinked and glycosylated lactoferrin were stabilized by the protein layer and preserved the antioxidant activity of the encapsulated 7,8-dihydroxyflavone, thus resulting in promising delivery systems for protecting and transporting bioactive components [ 65 ]. Lectin-conjugated liposomes were also prepared as biocompatible, bio-adhesive drug carriers [ 66 ]. On the other hand, functionalizing liposomes with DNA has produced a diverse range of hybrid materials useful in drug delivery.…”

“…Lectin-conjugated liposomes were prepared using wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) to serve as bioadhesive drug carrier that can rapidly bind to oral epithelial cells within minutes, and stay on the cells to provide sustained, localized drug release for the management of oral ulcerative lesions and other related complications [65]. A significant reduction in oral cell damage was obtained when the bacterially infected cells were treated with amoxicillin-loaded WGA liposomes compared to the untreated controls.…”
