Lecture‐free biochemistry

Abstract: Biochemistry courses at Seattle University have been taught exclusively using process oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) without any traditional lecture component since 1997. In these courses, students participate in a structured learning environment, which includes a preparatory assignment, an in-class activity, and a follow-up skill exercise. Instructor-designed learning activities provide the content of the course while the cooperative learning structure provides the content-free procedures that promo… Show more

“…While student comprehension improves in these disciplines when active learning experiences are incorporated (Dougherty et al, 1995;Minderhout & Loertscher, 2007), the guidance of a tutor should remain a critical component to active learning as knowledge acquisition can suffer in its absence (Kirschner, Sweller, & Clark, 2006). Thus, the research questions guiding this study as follows:…”

“…Throughout this article we will refer to our POGIL "style" sessions as active learning classes (ALC). We based our innovation on processorientated guided enquiry learning (POGIL) as we believed it was a tried and tested solution to the problem of passive/ surface learning [12][13][14][15].…”

“…Students are arranged in groups receiving instructor supports when needed [17]. This method is used mainly in undergraduate classes and also in laboratory experiments, mostly related to science [17]- [20] as biochemistry [21] and ecology [22].…”
