Left Atrial Myxoma in the Elderly: Diagnosis by M‐Mode and Bidimensional Echocardiography

Abstract: Two cases are reported of left atrial myxoma in elderly patients, diagnosed by combined M-mode and bidimensional echocardiography. One patient was an 80-year-old man presenting with typical signs of mitral obstruction by an atrial tumor. His symptoms were erroneously attributed to chronic bronchitis until an echocardiogram was obtained. The other patient was a 70-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation of one year's duration. Left atrial myxoma, although rarely observed in the elderly, may be diagnosed easily … Show more

“…Whereas myxoma is readily suspected in a young patient presenting with one or more problems of the classic triad of constitutional, embolic, or obstructive symptoms, it can go unrecognized for a long time in the elderly 3 . Moreover, important signs pointing toward the presence of an intra‐atrial mass tend to be attributed to more common disorders such as heart failure due to hypertension, infections, mitral stenosis or regurgitation, and coronary artery disease 13 …”

“…In our case as in many previous reports, the diagnosis was not suspected clinically and was made later by TTE. LAM, although rarely observed in the elderly, may be diagnosed easily by means of echocardiography [9].…”

“…Whereas myxoma is readily suspected in a young patient presenting with one or more symptoms of the classic triad, it can go unrecognized for long periods in the elderly. Moreover, important signs pointing towards the presence of an intra‐atrial mass tend to be attributed to more prevalent disorders such as infections, atherosclerosis, and coronary heart disease 7 . Increased life expectancy and the wide use of echocardiography should lead to some rise in cardiac tumor findings in geriatric patients.…”
