Left node blocking

Abstract: This article investigates a particular phenomenon of coordination that delivers important clues about the nature of syntactic structures. We call this phenomenon LEFT NODE BLOCKING -the designation is a play on the related concept of RIGHT NODE RAISING. Left node blocking provides insight into how syntactic structures are produced and processed. The dependency grammar analysis of the left node blocking phenomenon put forth here focuses on ROOTS in coordinated strings. By acknowledging roots, it is possible t… Show more

“…On a traditional bottom-up derivation, this does not help us: we predict that adjuncts will have to stay in the lowest position of the chain. We therefore switch to a top-down, or, more precisely, left-to-right, derivational model (e.g., Phillips 1996, 2003; Bruening 2014; Al Khalaf 2015, 2017; Osborne & Gross 2017). In this type of model, the highest copy of a fronted XP is built and merged into the derivation first.…”

“…We now suggest that the directionality effect we documented in section 3.1 is a result of the directionality of tree construction. Following Phillips 1996, Richards 1999, Bruening 2010b, 2014a, 2016, Al Khalaf 2015, Osborne and Gross 2017, and Bruening and Al Khalaf 2018, among other works, we assume that syntactic structures are put together in a left-to-right rather than bottom-up fashion. To take a concrete example, consider the following:…”
