Left ventricular endocardial ecchinococcosis associated with multiple intracranial hydatid cysts

Abstract: Cardiac ecchinococcosis is a rare disease. Its incidence varies from 0.02-2%. Commonly seen in the left ventricle arising from the myocardium in the subepicardial region. We report a 15-year-old boy presented with a rare combination of a left ventricular subendocardial hydatid cyst associated with multiple cysts in the left cerebral hemisphere and right posterior occipital lobe. The patient underwent successful surgical excision of the left ventricular hydatid cyst using cardiopulmonary bypass.

“…The incidence of intracranial hydatid in India is 0.2% [9]. Cerebral hydatid cysts are more common in the pediatric population, with 80% of the affected patients being children [10,11], and are often attributed to patent ductus arteriosus [6,12]. In our study, children constituted 90% of hydatid brain patients but none had patent ductus arteriosus.…”

“…[7,8] Cardiac echinococcosis is a rare disease with incidence of 0.02-2%.The left ventricle is the most common area affected with incidence of 55-60%, followed by the right ventricle, interventricular septum, left atrium, right atrium and inter atrial septum. [9] The larvae of ecchinococcus granulosus reaches the heart through coronary circulation or pulmonary veins. Contractions of the heart provide a natural resistance to the growth of hydatid causing early rupture of cysts.…”
