This chapter discusses Article 191(1) TFEU, which provides the objectives of the EU’s environmental policy. It covers the preservation, protection, and improvement of the quality of the environment, the protection of human health, the prudent and rational utilization of natural resources, and the promotion of international measures to deal with environmental problems. It also mentions the EU’s commitment to animal welfare, which could be considered as an aspect of environmental policy. The chapter reviews the mainstreaming or integration obligation in Article 37 CFR that stipulates the environmental protection requirements that are integrated into the definition and implementation of the Union’s policies and activities. It describes the cross-cutting nature of environmental policy, which could be considered an aspect of public health policy, consumer protection, agriculture, and tourism.
